UMC

The “University Medical Center” Corporate Fund was established following the decision of the board of trustees of the autonomous organization of education “Nazarbayev University” on September 20, 2015.


UMC has a capacity of 729 inpatient beds, 49 day beds, and accommodates 500 outpatient ambulatory examinations per shift. It encompasses three innovative medical centers: the Diagnostic Center (DC), the Mother and Child Center (MCC), and the Heart Center (HC).


The UMC centers have been accredited by Joint Commission International, a prestigious global certification in healthcare.


UMC is part of the integrated academic healthcare system of Nazarbayev University (NU Medicine). The goal of this system is to advance healthcare in Kazakhstan through the integration of clinical, educational, and research activities. UMC Hospitals

Mother and Child Center (MCC)
The Mother and Child Center (MCC) is the largest multidisciplinary hospital specializing in obstetrics, gynecology, urology, pediatrics, neonatology, IVF, and pediatric surgery.

  • Provides about 60 types of highly specialized medical care to women, pregnant women, women in labor, and children under 18 years of age.
  • Annually serves over 20,000 patients and delivers more than 4,000 newborns.
  • Conducts over 200 IVF procedures per year.
  • Offers methodological assistance to regional clinics.

  • Modern Surgery: Utilizes advanced surgical techniques for gynecological diseases, including laparoscopic and organ-preserving plastic surgery.
  • Obstetric and Neonatal Care: Provides comprehensive obstetric care and neonatology services.
  • Peritoneal Dialysis: Administers peritoneal dialysis for newborns.
  • Pediatric Pathologies: Diagnoses and treats pediatric pathologies, including rare (orphan) and autoimmune diseases.

  • Transplantation: Performs kidney and liver transplants in children.
  • Stem Cell Transplantation: Conducts umbilical cord blood collection and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
  • Joint Endoprosthesis: Performs joint endoprosthesis, including procedures for children with hemophilia.
  • Scoliosis Surgery: Provides surgical correction of scoliotic deformities in children.
  • Reconstructive-Plastic Surgeries: Conducts reconstructive and plastic surgeries on the trachea and larynx in children.
  • Genetic Diagnosis: Offers comprehensive genetic diagnostic services.
  • Interventional Procedures: Executes interventional diagnostic and treatment procedures, as well as reconstructive and hybrid surgical interventions.
Heart Center UMC (HC)
The Heart Center UMC (HC) is the leading cardiovascular surgical center in the Central Asian region, adhering to global standards in quality and level of medical care and service, with national and international recognition in research and educational activities.
  • Operational Since: October 2011.
  • Bed Capacity: 200 beds.
  • Facilities: 6 operating rooms, 5 catheterization laboratories, and 36 intensive care beds.

Main Clinical Areas:
  • Heart Defects: Treatment of congenital and acquired heart defects.
  • Coronary Artery Disease: Treatment of coronary artery disease.
  • Heart Failure: Treatment of heart failure.
HC performs the full range of heart and vascular surgeries for adults and children, including the most complex operations and high-tech, multi-stage cardiac surgeries for children in their first year of life. The center also serves as the curator of cardiac surgery and cardiology services in the country.

Staff and Capacity:
  • Staff: Approximately 900 employees, including about 130 doctors and more than 330 nursing staff;
  • Patient Care: Approximately 90,000 patients were treated, including 647 foreign patients from distant and neighboring countries.
  • Surgeries and Procedures:
  1. Over 30,000 open-heart surgeries;
  2. More than 78,000 interventional procedures and studies;
  3. More than 260,000 outpatient patients were examined.

Technological Advancements and Achievements:
  • New Technologies: Implementation of 23 new medical technologies for diagnosis and treatment;
  • Unique Surgeries: Performance of over 6,925 unique surgeries;
  • LVAD Implants: 496 LVAD devices long-term mechanical circulatory support devices were implanted.
  • TAVI Procedures:
  1. 802 transcatheter aortic valve implantations (TAVI);
  2. 25 hybrid TAVI implantations (transcatheter aortic valve implantation in the projection of the mechanical valve during open-heart surgery).
  • Transplants: 89 heart transplants and 18 lung transplants were conducted

Research and Training:
  • Implementation of 20 clinical studies and 11 research projects, including international collaborations;
  • Conducted 270 training cycles for specialists from the regions and 170 master classes.
Diagnostic Center (DC)
The Diagnostic Center (DC) specializes in providing consultative and diagnostic medical care to adults and children using the latest technologies and evidence-based medicine in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
  • Operational Since: 2008.
  • Staff: Over 700 employees, including approximately 220 doctors and 200 mid-level medical workers.
  • Capacity: Performs 500 visits per shift, with 49 day beds.

Services and Specialties:
  • Consulting Specialties: Highly qualified doctors in 46 specialties provide consulting assistance, including allergology, gynecology, mammology, pediatrics, neurology, uronephrology, fetal medicine, and more.
  • Laboratory Tests: Conducts more than 650 types of laboratory tests, including COVID-19 diagnostics. Annually, more than 1 million laboratory tests are performed at the DC.
  • Advanced Diagnostic Equipment:
  1. Equipped with a positron emission tomograph (PET/CT) and a single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT);
  2. Features a production line for the manufacturing of radiopharmaceuticals;
  3. Conducts more than 70,000 diagnostic PET/CT/MRI examinations annually.
